Mampa has built a very effective narrow belt sander that I have used to shape wood sculptures with great success. The narrow belt allows me to get into tight spaces and sand thin wood shapes that would break if I tried to use a file. An important caveat, you need to use a VS grinder or you will prematurely wear the sanding belts. When I first got the sander I kept breaking belts. I blamed the quality of the belts. They would separate at the seam every time. Onc slowed the speed down the belts no longer break. I think this should be stated in their instructions.
