I use this grinder for Hamburger and Pate. It is so much better than the POS plastic grinder Kitchenaid markets. The Chef's Choice grinder actually cuts the meat while the cheap pressed pot metal knife of the KA doesn't. The KA simply pushes the meat through the dies.Additionally there is a nice large tray to put the forcemeat on and push it into the grinder throat. The only thing I don't like is the cheap plastic plunger it's too narrow and the top pulls off when you pull it back.I bought this to fit on my KSM90 Kitchen Aid mixer which it does beautifully. I mostly grind chicken breasts with it and it does an outstanding job. It is easy to attach and disassemble. Sometimes I do not use the pan part, but just drop the meat parts down into the opening. One thing a buyer should be aware of is that all pieces except the pusher must be handwashed. I do not find this a problem. I just fill the sink with hot soapy water before I start grinding the meat. When I am through, as I take apart the grinder I just dump the pieces in the hot soapy water. They clean up quite easily. After washing and air drying or towel drying I give the metal pieces a spritz of vegetable cooking oil as per the simple instructions. Except for the pusher all the pieces are metal. It is so easy to use I grind up several pounds of meat at one time and freeze them. I can control the amount of fat and water in my own ground chicken or beef burgers. I love this thing and I am glad I spent the extra for it as opposed to the plastic Kitchen Aid one. I do recommend it.My son shot his first deer this year and we decided to make our own burger. I opted to buy this grinder attachment - my wife already had the KitchenAid Artisan Mixer - although, I think this works with any of the KitchenAid models. I nearly opted for the cheaper plastic one but chose to spend more on this one - there were some reviews on the plastic one that were concerning. I am so glad I got this one. It is an amazing product and very well worth every penny. I rarely write reviews but this product is really superb. We had our venison scrap cut up Sunday morning and I had partially frozen it and my son and I used this to grind up into burger. We did nearly 20 lbs of burger in maybe 15 minutes working together. It grinded awesome and worked perfectly. I would very highly advise that you buy this one not the plastic cheaper one - you will not regret it. Our deer burger looks as good as it did when we had the butcher do it for us. I attached a photo of our ground venison. This is my first meat grinder, and I've only used it once, however my initial experience was very good. The instructions were clear, and I followed the included recommendations (and those I've read elsewhere) to chill the meat, cut it into the correct size chunks and strips, and remove as much sinewy material as I could. I used the included medium grinder plate to grind about five pounds of beef chuck roast, pork chops, and lamb chops. The finished product was a perfect consistency and looked delicious. I experienced no problems, with nothing getting stuck in the grinder. Cleanup was easy in some soapy water. I look forward to using it again next time I find a good sale on meat. Grinding five pounds took only about five minutes or less on speed level 4. The only real time consuming aspect was trimming the meat ahead of time. So far my opinion is that this is a quality product. It seems rugged, with parts fitting together tightly. I do not see anything that looks like it will break easily, except for perhaps the plastic plunger. Mating the grinder to the Kitchen Aid was easy, and the fit was tight. The chilled meat caused the metal to contract, so unscrewing the ring was impossible until after I held it under hot water for a few seconds. Before buying this, I did a lot of research on the grinder attachments that fit the Kitchenaid mixer, as well as on stand alone grinders. No grinder had 100% great reviews, so I really had to read about all the good and bad for each model. After much deliberation I finally decided that this grinder would be my best bet. I hoped that I would have the same experience as the other 'positive' reviewers, and I was not disappointed! To put it simply, this grinder works perfectly! Although it's may not be as fast as a commercial grinder, it is way faster (and easier) than the old manual hand grinder we used for years. I used this for two large deer that our family harvested this season, and was very happy with the speed. I constantly inspected the venison for grease and metal shavings that others found in various grinders...but there were Zero of these contaminants from this grinder in our meat. I like that the grinder plates and cutting blade are stainless steel. There are no plastic parts that I could see. We cleaned it before we used it, then again after. All parts are very smoothly finished and easy to get clean.I am definitely happy with this purchase and hope to get years of use from it!I bought this after reading the glowing reviews here and the crappy reviews of the plastic version. This attachment is really good! I use it to coarsely grind pork to make Chinese dumplings. Use the plastic thing to push the meat down (and not chopsticks)! I used chopsticks once and it chewed up the tips. I store this device in the freezer and it's good to go whenever I need it. I store the tray in the cupboard though. Also, just because it's stainless steel does not mean that you can put it in the dishwasher. Don't do it! I tried putting the main part in the dishwasher and it got really messed up. I had to soak it in cream of tarter to get all the black discolouration off. Just use a brush to clean the inside and keep it in the freezer.Turn your wife's KitchenAid stand mixer into something useful for meat. This is a great grinder for the money, no 'ragrets'. Maybe one.. I would splurge for the 3 piece. The coarse grind is all well and good for the initial grind on chuck roast but for burgers the coarse leaves too much unprocessed fat and the fine is just a tad too fine. Could use the medium die.Another thing, follow the directions on it so you keep the stand mixer from working too hard. This is an attachment, not a commercial grinder so don't crank it to 10, jam it full of meat and expect it to shoot beef out like a firehose. Keep it to 4-6 speed and add meat at a reasonable pace. For the price, I did not really expect too much from this item. However, I am super impressed and I have used it many times. I am graduating from a very old hand cranked item that attached to a narrow counter. It was work just keeping it in place while I ground meat. Chef's Choice Premium Metal Food Grinder fits nicely onto my Kitchenaid Mixer, it cranks out the meat in no time flat (Make sure the mixer is at the highest speed.) and I just stand there pushing the meat, sliced onions, cooked carrots or whatever, into the hole at the top. Something I am not fussy on is the fact that the mixing part of the mixer still spins around even though it has no job. This is NOT the fault of the food grinder. Kitchenaid could think about making a bypass unit perhaps. The parts are easy to clean but I have washed them by hand only... not sure my dishwasher would be kind in the long run. The quality of the metal parts are wonderful. My family is getting lots more shepherd's pie than it used to. :-)it does what it is supposed to do, people who complain that it became spotted after washing it in the dishwasher did not read the instructions, it was clearly mentioned that it doesn't go in the dishwasher! It works better when the meat has been previously frozen 15 minutes. Some people complained that the pusher is cheap, but it is also plastic container to store the discs and the meat does not need to be pushed that much, it goes by itself through the grinder. We haven't experiences the black oil residue that people mentioned yet. We have used it on beef, chicken legs and vegetables to make relish and it turned out good.Fantastic! Was skeptical because the kitchensif one I had was a pain in the butt, clogging every few seconds with sinew. This is worth every penny! Rips through meat, sooooo much better! The metal blades are sharp and very little is left in the blade after grinding 10 lbs of meat! If you are really into making sausages, it’s worth it to order a sausage stuffer as well instead of the one from kitchenaid (also painfully slow to use).
