I think how you look at this product depends a lot on how you currently make your coffee. If you use the Keurig, this is probably the best option if you want to grind beans. Before buying this, I used sealed k-cups and then would follow the procedure to recycle the k-cups. Basically I would remove the foil, dump out the coffee to put on the flowers, remove the filter for compost, and dispose of the cups in plastic recycle. So basically, there is coffee grounds that need to be cleaned up.With the SoloGrind, I insert the reusable k-cup, tap the sides of the grinder with a spoon to get ground coffee in the chute to drop, remove the cup from the grinder, close the lid, make my coffee, dump the used grounds, and then disassemble and rinse the reusable k-cup. Overall, this is about the same effort and time as what I was spending before recycling k-cups.So after using it for a couple weeks, these are the conclusions I've come up with.1. The design if could be improved. The construction leads to buildup in the grinding mechanism and chute. This is why you have to tap the sides of the grinder each time you use it to knock loose coffee grounds that stick inside the grinder. Part of the problem is the path the ground coffee has to take to get into the cup. It should be redesigned so the cup is directly underneath the grinding mechanism. In addition, the materials could possibly be such that the ground coffee does not stick ... perhaps ceramic grinder and stainless steel for the path of ground coffee into the k-cup.2. If you currently use sealed k-cups and don't do any recycling of the used cups or coffee, then you will most assuredly have to deal with more of a mess than what you are used to and you expect no mess, this is not the product for you.3. You HAVE to tap the sides of the grinder before removing the reusable k-cup or there will be a time when you do have a pretty good sized mess. The coffee grounds stick in the chute and if you don't tap the sides to get those to fall into the cup, they will fall down when you bump or have to move the grinder later and it will be a pretty good sized mess.4. Don't expect to the instructions to be helpful. As has been mentioned by a previous reviewer, the instructions don't mention cleaning the grinder at all. In addition, if you are new to using reusable k-cups, there is no information on it either. The k-cup can actually be disassembled for easier cleaning and there is a piece that can be adjusted so there is no pressure placed on the needle of your Keurig used to puncture the normal k-cups. In addition, the instructions regarding the timer are useless. If you are using this to fill reusable k-cups, set it to one and even with that you will be compressing the grounds in the k-cup when you snap the lid closed.5. Lastly, I feel the manufacturer needs to focus on what the purpose of this product is supposed to be. I feel most of the issues are because they have designed this grinder as a coffee grinder first and as a solo cup grinder as an afterthought. The instructions probably work better if you use the supplied large container to catch the coffee, i.e. use it as a regular grinder ... but this is not the grinder I would buy for that purpose. They really are the only option for a grinder that will fill a "solo" reusable k-cup, but if they would focus on that, they could provide a second reusable cup instead of the large catch container and they could make the timer adjustment more refined so that it was useful for use to refine filling a "solo" k-cup.Overall, this is probably the best option for using reusable k-cups. The only other option I am aware of grinding small amounts into a container and then transferring those grounds to a reusable k-cup. I've done that and would not want to do that long term.UPDATE -Well, sadly the good times have ground to a halt. A couple months after this purchase the grinder stopped grinding to a consistency that is brewable. I cleaned event crevice following excellent guidance from the question section ⬆️ Tried this multiple times to no avail. I added pictures of the “grounds” which look more like chunks than grounds. This is on the finest setting. The bowl on the far right has usable fine grind from my old grinder. The most disappointing part is I sent an email to the Customer Service department, as directed in the documentation that came with the grinder. I’ve waited nearly a month for their reply before posting this update. Nothing. So I have downgraded my review from 5 stars to 3. The concept is still good. My original Solofill from years ago is still working well enough. But I have now received two unusable grinders, the first (noted below) was DOA and very promptly replaced and now that replacement which grinds unusable beans. Sigh.——————————————————-original review below ———————————-Found one of these years ago at Bed, Bath & Beyond and ended up stashing it in the closet. Recently I’ve just found no available K-cup that really tasted good. And, yes, I feel guilty about the waste. So I dragged it down and tried again and loved it! Getting really good, fresh beans ground just before brewing makes all the difference. My husband only drinks 1/2 caffeinated so I decided to get a second, dedicated for him so there’s no concern about too much caffeine. It’s about $15 LESS than I paid years ago. But, it arrived DOA. So, I started the return process and said I wanted the same item. Well, they sent it right away, arrived next day and said return the first when you get the replacement. WOW.I prefer to use separately purchased reusable K-cups vs. the cup that comes with the grinder. The cup that comes with the grinder must be perfectly aligned in the coffee maker. Who has time & patience for that before you’ve had coffee??? Seriously, not that big a deal, but the others are just easier. Also learned the hard way to pop a fresh cup into the grinder right away. It will not operate if the lid isn’t closed, but it will happily grind into nothing or onto your counter if a cup isn’t there to catch grounds!Works great and coffee is so much better! I discovered with my older one that you need to periodically do a thorough cleaning. When it stopped working I tried just clearing away grounds I could see. Turns out that wasn’t enough. I found instructions online. Not at all difficult and it’s back to working like a charm!I had gotten this as an entry level burr grinder, seeking to produce consistently fine grinds for introductions into espresso making. However, the finest setting on this grinder produced inconsistent grind sizes mixed between an ultra fine powder and nearly a normal 'drip' frind size. I found myself attempting to pour the first grinding back into the feeder to try to run them back through snd further grind them into a smaller and more consistent size. This however was to no avail, as there was no change after a second pass through, only making more of a mess in the process. I actually got more consistent and controllable grind sizes out of a typical cheap blade type 'spice' style grinder by varying my grinding technique with it, for 1/4 or less of the price of this grinder. Also of note, I was rather unimpressed with how messy the grinder was - even with the catch bin fully inserted, the grounds were being flung into the catch bin with such speed and ferocity that there were pieces and a lot of the fine dust mentioned above that found their way out of some of the small openings in the catch bin, leaving a mess on and around the machine and counter it was on. I had to take it out to the garage to blow it off with compressed air after each use, and wipe a considerable amount of grounds off of the counter.I ended up returning the unit, as I was not satisfied and did not intend to continue using it.I wanted this because I requently use reusable K cups for coffee and I wanted to get the exact amount of coffee grounds each time. The problem with this product is that no matter what K cup used, it always fills it too much. I used the recommended settings in the instruction manual and that was too much, and the only way I've gotten it to work seemingly correctly is on the lowest timing setting. Also the area where you place your K cup is only usable for longer K cups but you can hold shorter ones in place. Even though it is built for longer K cups, letting it sit by itself will throw a bit of grounds around so you will need to remove that bit and dump out excess grounds. It took awhile before I found the best way to grind coffee for my stainless steel K-cup pods. Before then it would overfill the pod and/or cause the hot water to overflow the pod. Now I use coarseness setting “B” and grind time “1”. In addition, and perhaps most importantly, once the grinder stops and the filled k-cup pod is removed, I use a thin knife blade or the plastic handle of a Melita scoop to fluff up the grounds in the pod and scrape them away from the sides. It seems that when the grinds are dropping into the pod they can form clumps, pack tightly against the sides, and plug the tiny filter holes. Since I’ve started doing this I’ve had great success making single cups of coffee.UPDATE Mar 4/20. - dropped my rating to 1 star because I have decided to stop using it altogether. It simply is not a good grinder for the reasons described below. Plugging is more frequent now and the mess of constantly having grinds all over the place (big waste of coffee and money too) just makes it not worth using. I will be looking for a better unit.ORIGINAL REVIEW I really wanted to like this grinder but it falls very short of the description. Admittedly I was attracted to the features, at what I feel is a reasonable price.First off, it's main function is to grind coffee and it does do this well. It is noisier than I expected but those burrs are working hard to grind up those beans so I am not faulting the machine. But that is where the positive ends.grind a precise amount of beans? No, it doesn't. the dial on the front appears to be a timer and on the absolutely lowest setting it overfills the inclulded Keurig reusable filter. To me the attraction was I just find the right setting for the cup, keep it at that and have an easy cup any time but no, every single time you have to pour some of the grinds out of the filter so it will close properly. the 'precise amount' feature falls very short.2 in 1? eh, that is stretching the definition especially when 1 of the 2 doesn't work as advertised. It plugs up - often - needing to be cleaned out before you can get your cup of coffee. there is no convenience in using this for a quick Keurig if halfway through the grind you have to stop (you can hear the motor pitch change when it gets plugged) to clean it out and then try to finish filling the filter without over fillingit is messy - holy cow, I am not the tidiest person in the kitchen but this thing gets coffee grounds everywhere. Every time you go to use it, there are grounds where the pod sits, meaning you will have grounds on the outside of your filter when done. More cleaning up before you can have your cup of coffee.I was looking for a good grinder (which this is), and the convenience of putting the keurig pod on the grinder, hit a button, get the right amount of grinds, without a big mess - and this I did not get.3 stars for doing a good job of grinding, no stars for ease of use, cleanliness and accuracy in the description. This is a great grinder. Using the K-cup it comes with I can make exactly one cup of coffee at a time. It can be a bit messy at times with coffee grounds flowing off. On the 1 setting it fills the reusable K-cup right up to the top. I wish it would go about 7/8's of the way though and it is not really possible to set it lower. It's also a bit on the noisy side (as you would expect a grinder to be) so grind at night if you want to minimize noise early in the morning. Also, it's rather nice looking on the counter. I've only used one kind of bean so far (Sumatra blend) and after running it through the Keurig it can flush some grounds through into the cup. The grind selector is nice so you can choose fine or course ground to suit your flavor profile. So far I love this machine and think it's great for a regular coffee drinker. It is compact, not overly noisy and works well except as other posters have mentioned, it does overfill the cup every time so I have to count to 7 and stop it myself ;) Hardly a deal breaker though. It still beats grinding by hand and I prefer a fresh grind to batch grinding so this is still ideal for me.Also, if I use my own pod/cup it works ok but I have to hold it up or grounds get all over but with the red cup included, there is no mess. And lastly, the grind is just slightly inconsistent.. on the finest grind a few bits are still a little coarser than sugar but this has not affected the flavour for me.Overall I am very happy with this grinder and hope it continues to work well over time.
